Led Through the Wilderness

By: Gina Bridgeman

During a vacation to St. Charles, Missouri, the quaint town that in 1804 was the launching point for Meriwether Lewis and William Clark’s history-making expedition west of the Mississippi River, I became fascinated with the courage of these adventurous men. Knowing little about what they might find, the Corps of Discovery was thrilled to head off into uncharted land, land so mysterious that even President Thomas Jefferson believed that the woolly mammoth might still have inhabited the area.

I was feeling a little like Lewis and Clark at the time, only a bit overwhelmed by another kind of uncharted territory ahead of me: special work projects; the presidency of an organization I belonged to; becoming leader of my son Ross’s Cub Scout den; leading a Bible study for the first time. I wondered how Lewis and Clark were able to bridge the gap between the known and the unknown. As I learned more, the answer seemed to lie in their great faith—faith in themselves and in each other, unfailing trust in their own skills and judgment.

That’s the kind of faith God wants me to have in Him, I thought. I must trust in His limitless abilities, His leadership and His judgment to know what’s right for me. He created these wonderful opportunities for me: to lead an organization I care about; to spend time with my son in learning and fun; to express myself creatively in work and church.

When I feel I’m in over my head, I need to turn to God in prayer, asking His guidance and direction. I can count on His infinite skill to lead me through the wilderness He sets before me.

Stranded: The Angel That Gave Her Hope

Julie had loaded her station wagon with suitcases, toys and snacks—not to mention her four children. They were traveling from Western Massachusetts to Long Island, New York, to spend Thanksgiving with Julie’s parents. It was a daunting new chapter in their lives, as Julie’s husband had left her just days before.

It started to snow as they hit the road, but the journey progressed smoothly despite the weather. By late afternoon, Julie was navigating I-95 just outside the Bronx. Suddenly, the car’s engine sputtered and stopped. She just managed to coast onto the highway’s shoulder.

In the past, her husband would have taken charge, but now, she was on her own. Stranded without a phone and no assistance in sight, Julie said a prayer for courage and reassured her two eldest children that she would seek help while they looked after their younger siblings.

Waving from the side of the highway in hopes someone would stop brought no results. She looked every which way but saw no sign of hope. Finally, she spotted smoke rising from a chimney in the distance. She checked on the kids and hurried off in that direction.

Shivering, she knocked on the house’s door and explained her situation to the woman who answered. As it happened, the woman’s son owned a towing business, and his tow truck was parked nearby. “We’ll get you where you need to go,” he said. He towed the car, with Julie and the kids in the cab beside him, all the way to Long Island.

At her parents’ house, Julie’s mother reassured her, reminding her that she had shown her children that they could count on her. Julie realized that whatever her future held, there was someone she could count on too. Someone who would never leave her stranded.

Reflect

What will you do the next time you are faced with the unknown?

I will reach out to others for help and put my trust in them.

I will keep my eyes on God’s plan for my life.

I will pray to God for direction and comfort.

May God’s love encourage and guide your steps today. We’ll see you again soon!
