Feel Jesus With You

By: Sandra Clifton

Heading toward me with a pile of papers was the now-familiar test monitor. It was my third and final chance to take the qualifying test for seminary. On my two earlier attempts, I became too paralyzed with fear to finish it. Today was do or die.

A memory was forming. It was the summer when I had another dream—of hiking up tall mountain peaks. I applied to a mountain-hiking club. I would go through weeks of intense training, but first had to take a test on my hiking knowledge. As the instructor handed me my examination, I panicked. What did I know, besides “wear good shoes?”

What did I do? Feeling Jesus with me, I stayed and took the test. Weeks later, I walked in my dream and reached those tall peaks.

Today, as I sat quaking in my boots while taking my test, I suddenly felt my Lord Jesus with me. Just then, I knew that in His presence, I could walk in my dream and climb new heights—all the way through seminary.

Pray for Bold Goals

Since the beginning of time, humans have been wary of what they do not understand, and God has always been mindful of our unease. That’s why He Himself goes with us. He wants us to be bold for Him, to live our lives to full fruition, to fulfill His plan in the world. Keeping that in mind, try these five steps to boldness.

  1. Is it right with God?
We can attain conviction by first seeking God’s will in all that we wish to accomplish. Ask God if your goal is right. If you sense affirmation, then take the next step.
  2. Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid.
Commit yourself by biting off more than you think you can chew, rather than letting fear of failure stop you from trying at all. Those “mighty forces”? They are energy, skill, sound judgment, creativity, even physical strength and endurance. Boldness creates a state of emergency to which these powers respond.
  3. Don’t look over your shoulder.
If you do, as baseball’s great Satchel Paige said, “You may see something gaining on you.” That something could be the fears you overcame at the start. So keep up your momentum.
  4. Make the leap of faith.
In Jesus’ parable of the talents, the servant who buried his employer’s money was criticized for failing to put it to use. The servant’s alibi sums up too many people’s attitude toward life: “I was afraid to risk it.”
  5. Don’t duck the spotlight.
The next time you hear a call for volunteers or see someone who needs assistance or spot a wrong that needs righting, strive for the boldness that shouts: “Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven!”

Reflect

What will be your first step when faced with the next seemingly impossible goal?

Let go of fear, trust God, and take the first step forward.

Pause and take a moment to be clear on what I want to achieve.

Pray and share my plans and my fears with God.

May God’s love encourage and guide your steps today. We’ll see you again soon!
